Conference on Explanations, Norms and Insights for the Governance of Machine Agents (ENIGMA 2024)

An event on the topics of normative reasoning, deontic explanations, and the risks of autonomous agent technologies.

Technological developments of autonomous agent technologies bring new opportunities, but also new issues for users and other parties. For instance, determining accountability and responsibility in a multi-party incident where an agent is also involved is not an easy task. A useful perspective can be found in deontic explanations, that are concerned with explaining why a given norm applies and why it should be followed by an agent, whether human or artificial. Insights from human and social sciences are relevant to such questions, but an impact can only be achieved if the values, principles and norms proposed are integrated in technology design and practical applications. This interdisciplinary approach is crucial for creating technologies that are not only innovative but also ethically sound and socially responsible.
